AP Reveals Bold Guidelines for AI Journalism: Industry Shaken

AI Journalism: The Associated Press (AP) has introduced guidelines to navigate the utilization of generative AI among its journalists. This comes as various news organizations, including AP, explore the integration of AI technology in their news gathering processes.

Amanda Barrett, AP’s Vice President for Standards and Inclusion, emphasized in a blog post that the organization perceives AI as a supplementary tool rather than a substitute for journalists. The newly introduced guidelines are designed to assist reporters and editors in effectively employing AI-generated content.

While AP journalists are encouraged to experiment with AI-powered tools like ChatGPT, they are cautioned against producing publishable content using these tools. The output from generative AI platforms is deemed “unvetted source material” and thus subject to AP’s prevailing sourcing standards. Importantly, AI is not permitted to manipulate visual or auditory content, and AI-generated images are only admissible in news stories as long as they are clearly labeled as such in captions.

Confidential information should not be input into AI tools, and sources devoid of AI-generated content are preferred. A key concern is avoiding the inadvertent dissemination of AI-generated content that could contribute to misinformation. Consequently, AP staff are urged to verify the accuracy of content before using it in their reporting.

Given AP’s authoritative role in shaping journalism standards, its approach garners significant attention from the industry. The guidelines could exert a notable influence on the ongoing debate surrounding AI’s integration into journalistic practices.

Interestingly, despite setting these parameters for its staff, AP recently entered into an agreement with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to employ its news stories for training generative AI models. AP’s engagement with automated tools extends to rapid financial report summaries and coverage of minor sports leagues. The organization, alongside BuzzFeed and others, has also joined an open letter advocating for transparency in the data used to train generative AI models.

These guidelines from AP emerge amidst news that The New York Times has curtailed the use of its data for training AI models and has withdrawn from a coalition focused on negotiating training data with AI companies. As the industry grapples with the multifaceted role of AI in journalism, AP’s approach sets a precedent for responsible AI integration while emphasizing journalistic integrity.
