Chinese President Xi Jinping to Skip G20 Summit in India -Potential Impact on the Host Country

Xi Jinping to Skip G20 Summit Statement: Recent reports indicate that Chinese President Xi Jinping is unlikely to attend the upcoming G20 Summit scheduled to be held in India. Instead, Premier Li Qiang is expected to represent China at the summit, according to sources familiar with the matter.

While President Xi’s absence from the G20 Summit may raise questions, it is worth noting that previous G20 Summits have seen leaders from various countries skip the event for a variety of reasons. This decision is not necessarily a reflection of India’s standing as the host country, as clarified by officials.

The upcoming G20 Summit in Delhi is set to span two days, from September 9 to 10, and will bring together leaders and delegates from 40 countries, including the 20 member states of the G20.

In addition to President Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin has also conveyed his decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to attend the summit in person due to his focus on a “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Following the East Asia summit in Jakarta, Premier Li is expected to travel to India for the G20 Summit. In 2021, President Xi did not attend the G20 summit in Italy due to China’s COVID-19 restrictions.

However, it’s important to note that there has been no official confirmation from either China or India regarding who will represent Beijing at the G20 summit.

The G20 has a history of varying levels of attendance at its summits. While the first three summits in 2008 and 2009 saw full participation, subsequent years have witnessed occasional absences at the Heads of State or Heads of Government level due to various scheduling constraints.

The G20 consists of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union (EU).

In the modern world, where leaders are confronted with numerous commitments, it is not always feasible for every leader to attend every global summit, reflecting the changing dynamics of international diplomacy.
