During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Senator Rounds stated that he had recently spoken with McConnell and found him to be “perfectly capable” of carrying out his responsibilities despite the health scares. McConnell had experienced two notable incidents where he froze during press conferences, once in July and more recently in Kentucky, where he paused for nearly 30 seconds when questioned about his reelection plans for 2026. After the most recent incident, McConnell’s office announced that he would consult a doctor.

According to Senator Rounds, McConnell attributed these episodes to a concussion he had sustained in March, which left him susceptible to occasional lightheadedness. Despite these challenges, Rounds emphasized McConnell’s sharpness and shrewdness, stating that McConnell comprehends the tasks at hand and knows what needs to be done.

Rounds also expressed his confidence in McConnell’s ability to lead the Senate Republican Party. McConnell, at 81 years old, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Senate party leader. Rounds believes that McConnell remains an invaluable asset to the party and is committed to the road ahead.
