Interim Head Coach Named as Search for Replacement Commences
Vlatko Andonovski, the head coach of the United States women’s soccer team, has stepped down from his position following a disappointing World Cup campaign, as confirmed by U.S. Soccer in an official statement released on Thursday.
In the wake of Andonovski’s departure, Twila Kilgore, who has served as an assistant coach for the past 18 months, will take on the role of interim head coach while the quest for a suitable replacement begins.
Andonovski expressed his sentiments, stating, “Coaching the talented and dedicated players of the USWNT for the past four years has been an absolute honor. Despite the outcome at this year’s World Cup, I am incredibly hopeful for the program’s future, especially considering the emergence of young players who have displayed potential to lead and make an impact in the years ahead.”
Acknowledging the team’s progress under his leadership, he added, “While our departure from this World Cup is disappointing, the strides this team has made are a source of immense pride.”
The USA’s journey in the latest World Cup came to an unexpected halt in the round of 16, with Sweden edging out a victory via a penalty shootout—marking the earliest exit the team has experienced in a World Cup tournament.
Under the tutelage of Andonovski, the U.S. clinched a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics after a semifinal loss to eventual champions Canada.
Matt Crocker, U.S. Soccer’s sporting director, expressed gratitude towards Andonovski, affirming, “Vlatko’s commitment to our Women’s National Team over the past four years has been exceptional. His resolute leadership has been invaluable to our women’s program. We appreciate his significant contributions to U.S. Soccer and anticipate a promising future for him in the sport.”
Crocker, who has been conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the women’s program, will spearhead the search for a new head coach. With the forthcoming change of guard and the transitioning of veterans like Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, and Kelley O’Hara, the incoming coach will play a pivotal role in shaping the team for upcoming challenges, including the Paris Olympics in the following year.
